Most foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Canada. Many employer-specific work permits require the employer to first obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada, showing that hiring a foreign worker will not negatively affect Canadian workers. Other work permits are LMIA-exempt or open.
A work permit can also be a stepping stone to permanent residence through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program.
